Agia Triada Monastery

The beautiful Agia Triada Monastery is located roughly in the center of the Akrotiri peninsula, northeast of Chania. The nearest holiday resort is Stavros, which is situated 5 km to the northwest.

The location alone makes the trip worthwhile. The monastery is nestled in a stunning natural landscape, surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and mountains in the background. The only downside is Chania Airport, which lies just over 2 km to the south.

Agia Triada Crete

The Agia Triada Monastery was built in the 17th century by two brothers from a Venetian noble family. The high defensive walls provided protection at the time, and at the heart of the complex stands the church itself.

Several other structures are part of the monastery, including an olive oil mill, a wine press, a wine cellar, a large cistern for rainwater, stables, and more. However, the most impressive building is the church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity—Agia Triada in Greek. The well-preserved church features three domes, two side chapels, and many beautiful details. The bell tower beside the church was not built until 1864.

Visitors can also explore a small museum displaying artifacts dating back to the 12th century, as well as images and icons from the 16th and 17th centuries. The monastery’s small library houses some very old and rare books.

Before the trip continues, visitors can purchase the monastery’s self-produced products, such as wine, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, wine vinegar, honey, and olive oil soap. These high-quality products are even sold beyond Crete’s borders.

Agia Triada is easily accessible by rental car, but for those staying in Chania, a taxi ride is also affordable. The monastery is about 16 km away, and the trip takes roughly half an hour.
